The story in short goes like this. Zubeidaa (Karishma Kapoor)is a strong willed woman,who wants to live life on her own terms.She is the daughter of a producer,with a dream to act in films but is not allowed to enter films,dispite her father's profession.

Forcefully,she is tied down in material bonding with her dad's friend's son.Unhappy and reluctant,she yields to the call of domesticity and gives birth to a baby boy. But,since her in-Laws want to live in Karachi,Palistan,they are forced to separate.Zubeidaa leads a boring existence,until her father's friend,Rose,a film actress,introduces her to Victor,an aristocrat Raja played by Manoj Bajpai.Cupid strikes,and the two fall in love and Zubeidaa becomes second wife to Victor,the first wife being the dignified and graceful Mandira Devi(Rekha)
